People

I have been drawing and painting people for more than 60 years. Each person’s face and body, and the way they sit, stand, or lean against a wall, is a unique statement. I have included sketches of models who posed in life drawing sessions I attended. I have also selected works from my series of portraits of people with disabilities.

Over a 15-year span, I invited friends who have either visible or hidden disabilities to come to my studio. As a member of the disability community, my intent in creating and exhibiting this series of portraits is political.  I reject commonly held beliefs, stories and images in the media that frequently present us as either pitiable or heroic. Instead, I have tried to capture our ordinary dignity, humanity, agency, and self-respect.
